60 Earth Hour 2009
More than 4.000 cities and 88 countries around this globe, participated in an hour switch off campaign from 8.30 to 9.30PM according to each time zone. This campaign is a part of Vote Earth program, an anti-global warming community action initiated by WWF (World Wildlife Fund). This action is kicked off for the first time in 2007 in Sydney. We are very happy that in 2009, Indonesia joined with other world community for this solidarity campaign.
Jakarta, this Country’s capital city becomes the Indonesian Vote Earth’s icon. It is reported that during this year’s earth hour, no less then 50 buildings in Jakarta’s Golden Triangle region turn their light off. Even the Jakarta’s Governor, Fauzi Bowo as Indonesian Earth Hour’s Ambassador led this campaign himself.
Besides Jakarta as Indonesian symbol, no less than sixties countries’ capital cities and nine most populated metropolitans participated in this years Earth Hour. Those cities are New York, London, Beijing, Paris, Moscow, Singapore, Berlin, Roma, Athena, Cairo, Washington DC, Rio De Jeneiro, Dubai, Mexico, Sydney, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Toronto, Copenhagen, Manila, Istanbul, Nairobi, Bangkok, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires and Cape Town.
While in Spain, Earth Hour campaign is not only conducted in the capital city, but also in all 52 province’s capital cities. Right after the unset, all citizens turn their light off together.
WWF mentioned that some multinational companies joined this year’s Earth Hour Campaign. Those companies are McDonald’s Corp., The Marriott, Ritz-Carlton and Fairmont hotel networks and Coca-Cola Co.
